First Monday: Legal and Accounting Essentials for Music People

  • Alberta Abbey 126 Northeast Alberta Street Portland, OR, 97211 United States (map)

Baffled by bookkeeping?
clueless about contract negotiation?

Whether you're an artist, part of an incorporated band, an independent production contractor, or a sole proprietor music business, you need effective legal and accounting strategies to protect yourself (think copyrights, contracts, etc.). And while Covid may have decimated our industry for nearly two years, it also highlighted our needs to City, State, and Federal leaders, resulting in some new tax and worker protections.

From Oregon's recent paid leave program that can support you when you are unable to work to the expanded tax deductions that can save you lots of money – if you're an independent music venue, business, or artist, these are things that you really need to know about.

We’ll be joined by Michael Jonas of Rational Unicorn Legal Services and Jessie Hornby of Nerds 4 Numbers for an approachable and informative chat about ways you can level up your business. Don't worry, there will also be lots of time to mingle, but if you are serious about music as a profession (whether full or part-time), we hope to see you for this critical First Monday Meetup!
